The Life of Belisarius itself would make a great movie. It has all the elements needed; a heroic and loyal figure, a decadent royalty, palace intrigue, adultrous relationships and warfare. All of this under crumbling empire and religion distorted by evil men.

For history buffs I highly recommend by: 2. The 'Life of Belisarius' is really just a retelling of the works of Prokopios and Agathias, with a heavy Victorian slant. The 'scholarship' is shallow, and the writing is loaded with Gibbonisms, but nonetheless it still maintains some commendable features/5.

Belisarius was a successful and brilliant tactician but even though the battles were won, the wars were lost. Overall, this is a very good history.

The first third of the book gives a lot of background to Justinian's political problems in maybe a bit too much detail, but the story of Belisarius as a Byzantine general is well done indeed.4/5(96).

Jon Coulston’s introduction describes this as “ a work of meticulous scholarship penned by a British aristocrat with the resources and leisure for travel and research.” Philip Stanhope (a/k/a Lord Mahon) was 24 years old when “The Life of Belisarius” was published, and it is clearly a commendable, if flawed, effort.

:   The book is packed with information and would no-doubt be of interest to anyone undertaking a detailed study of Belisarius' campaigns, but for the most part it came across as a dry re-telling of the contemporary histories with little commentary to bring it to life/5.
